Livestream of the New Year's Eve concert
The Staatskapelle Berlin's festive concert at the turn of the year will be conducted by its new General Music Director Christian Thielemann for the first time this season. The orchestra, its conductor and singers Diana Damrau, Pavol Breslik and Mauro Peter will perform music from the first decades of the 20th century, primarily from the Weimar period, which was so decisive for the development of Berlin culture. Music from operettas, sound films and plays by Paul Lincke, Walter Kollo, Eduard Künneke, Paul Abraham, Ralph Benatzky, Kurt Weill, Werner Richard Heymann and Friedrich Hollaender, among others, will be performed. The Staatskapelle performs not only in symphonic form, but also in the form of a salon orchestra with special instrumentation, which alternates with the large orchestra and is conducted by the pianist and conductor Elias Corrinth.
The concert will be streamed live on New Year's Eve from 5 p.m. on staatsoper-berlin.de and on the website of radio3 vom rbb. On January 2 at 10 p.m., the linear broadcast will be on rbb television.
The program ranges from popular pieces from Paul Lincke's Frau Luna, Eduard Künneke's Der Vetter aus Dingsda and Ralph Benatzky's Im weißen Rössl. But music from Paul Abraham's Ball im Savoy and Kurt Weill's Der Silbersee is also included, paradigmatically representing “Weimar culture”, which is still fascinating today. In addition, songs from well-known sound films of the time are presented, for example by Werner Richard Heymann, who was one of the most successful film composers of the late 1920s and early 1930s, with vocals as well as in instrumental form. Finally, the singing voices, the salon orchestra and the large Staatskapelle unite to create musically pointed, colorful arrangements that provide an atmospheric accompaniment to the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.
