Abonnementkonzert VI

General Music Director Christian Thielemann will conduct the Staatskapelle in two concerts on March 24 and 25, 2025. The collaboration between Christian Thielemann and the orchestra began in June 2022 with a performance of Anton Bruckner's Seventh Symphony and continued with his Fifth in November 2023. Now the next symphony by Bruckner follows with the Sixth, conducted by the central Bruckner conductor of the present day.

Anton Bruckner's Sixth Symphony occupies a special position within his oeuvre, as a work of transition in which Bruckner explores new forms of composition. Despite its undeniable artistic significance and individual qualities, it long remained in the shadow of his more popular works. Bruckner himself never saw a complete performance of the work, and its later reception was also characterized by arrangements and cuts. Today, however, the Sixth Symphony is regarded as a key work of his symphonic oeuvre - a fascinating link between the earlier and late symphonies that points to the future with its innovative sound structures.

The program opens with Hans Werner Henze's 2003/4 composition for large orchestra Sebastian im Traum, based on the poem of the same name by Georg Trakl. Sebastian im Traum is a multi-layered orchestral work which, as “Salzburger Nachtmusik”, translates Georg Trakl's political imagery into music. Inspired by his longstanding engagement with the poet, Henze follows the “Spuren des Dichterworts” in his composition and creates a fascinating soundscape with ever new musical forms. In a brief playing time of around 15 minutes, a haunting, colorful music full of contrasts unfolds - from lyrical tones to powerful eruptions.
