The production not only celebrated its premiere on 13 June in front of a reduced audience in the Great Hall of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, but was also broadcast live in Berlin's first opera pop-up drive-in cinema on the run-up of the former Tempelhof airport building as part of #BMWOPERANEXT, the joint cooperation between the Staatsoper and BMW, as well as recorded and streamed live on www.staatsoper-berlin.de in cooperation with rbb kultur and broadcast on rbb kultur radio.
The opera, set in California at the time of the Gold Rush, is staged by Lydia Steier, who made her debut at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden with this production. The musical direction of the Staatskapelle Berlin is in the hands of Sir Antonio Pappano, Musical Director of the Royal Opera House and designated Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. The top-class ensemble of soloists includes Anja Kampe (Minnie) and Marcelo Álvarez (Dick Johnson) as well as Michael Volle (Jack Rance).
Further performances of »La fanciulla del West« will take place at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in the 2021/22 season.
