»Vanitas« - vanity - is the title of a musical theatre work by Salvatore Sciarrino which premiered in Milan in 1981. It deals with decay and decline in a very general manner. In October 2010 the Werkstatt studio theatre re-opened with »Infinito Nero« by the same Italian composer. This season the considerably longer musical action »Vanitas« will be staged. Sciarrino's art of dissecting moments in the storyline reach their first climax in this work. The music is set in the lowest dynamic strength range and Sciarrino - in parallel to the separation and atomisation of a storyline reflexion - subjects the musical material to a scanning process in the microtonal range by glissandi and flageolet trills. Thus he refuses to create a clear course or line even in his musical expression. For the composer the problem of setting language to music is no less important. In the case of the cantata-type »Still life in one act« for the inconceivably small cast of mezzo-soprano, violoncello and piano, Sciarrino compiles an anthology of baroque poetry which he condenses into a minimalist singing style, without, however, dispensing with the sense of the words used or without splitting them into phonems. This novel way of expression became not only the basic form of his own composing style, but has since then formed vocal and musical theatre compositions in the next generations. »Vanitas« makes full use of the wide range of vocal articulation to present psychic agitation as well as reflexion far removed from the human sphere. The work allows an understanding of the concept of transitoriness using the concept of music resounding and fading away in a manner previously unheard.
