The Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden is one of the leading opera choirs, nationwide as well as globally. The Choir was founded as early as 1742, when the Opera House was inaugurated. Since then the Choir has been an intrinsic part of opera and concert life. Today, this institution features about 90 full-time members. Partnering the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Choir won international acclaim during the numerous State Opera tours under Daniel Barenboim. They continue to do so at home, during the annual Berlin FESTTAGE of the Berlin State Opera.

Since 1998, Chourus Master Eberhard Friedrich has stood at the helm of the State Opera Choir. Under his directorship, the ensemble succeeded in continuing the great tradition associated with the Choir. This is evident in the way the immense opera repertoire is cultivated, during performances, but also in the treatment of rarely performed and highly sophisticated works. The Choir’s outstanding performance was honoured by the »Opernwelt« Journal Critics’ Award as »Choir of the Year 2004«.

There are many recordings with Daniel Barenboim that serve to document the elevated status of the State Opera Choir. Barenboim’s interpretation of »Tannhäuser« became another international showcase for the Choir when they received the Grammy Award along with the other performers.
