The Kinderchor der Staatsoper Unter den Linden has proven its worth as a reliable musical partner of the opera house and of other institutions in Berlin and further afield. It offers a well-founded musical training for its young singers who meet twice a week to study and rehearse the children's choir parts of the operas La Bohème, Un ballo in maschera, Tosca, Turandot, Boris Godunov, Pique Dame, Der Rosenkavalier, Carmen, Der gestiefelte Kater or of the ballet Der Nussknacker as well as the current concert repertoire. Three voice and choir instructors look after the vocal training.
In the 2007/2008 season Vinzenz Weissenburger became the leader of the children's choir. Since then he has been expanding the choir's fields of work and its public profile. In addition to regular performances on the opera stage, the choir gives concerts in the Staatsoper and during guest performances in Germany and abroad (e.g. in Dresden, Hamburg, Italy, France and the Baltic states). Additionally, working in co-operation with orchestras like the Berliner Philharmoniker or the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, gives the ensemble its own artistic identity. Just two years after its launch the Kinderchor won a prize in the Berlin choir competition.
On Christmas 2011 and 2012 the Kinderchor with Staatskapelle Berlin performed the Staatsoper Christmas concert. In April 2012 the choir sang in the new recording of Bizet's Carmen with Berliner Philharmoniker with Simon Rattle conducting.
The Kinderchor der Staatsoper Unter den Linden is always on the lookout for boys aged over 7 years with a good singing voice. The ability to play an instrument is appreciated. Their regular performances on stage and in concert and the pedagogic work in the workshops or during weekend trips create a close link between the children and classical music and of course the opera. Come and bring your child along to Staatsoper! Make an appointment for an audition with the supernumeraries' department on +49 (0)30-20 35 44 08.
